Parvin Mammadov, head of the Republican Narcology Center of the Ministry of Health, gave an interview about the activities of the Center

What is your assistance to the citizens treated at the Narcology Center?

"Republican Narcology Center" is a public legal entity operating as a specialized outpatient and inpatient drug treatment and prevention institution in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On protection of public health" and other relevant regulations.

The center provides treatment and prevention to prevent the development of drug addiction, alcoholism, drug addiction and other addictions among drug users, as well as intoxicated persons. The center carries out examination of temporary disability, including examination of alcoholism. Medical examination and treatment of persons sent to involuntary treatment for alcoholism, drug addiction and toxicomania, and psychotherapeutic and moral assistance are provided to persons who abuse drugs and other psychotropic substances.

How do you restore the health of the psychological state in drug treatment?

In addition to drug treatment, psychologists provide individual and group therapy to patients treated at the Narcology Center. Taking into account the current situation, the intensity of psychological care for patients has been increased.

How do you deal with COVID-19 in a pandemic?

In order to combat the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, the center has installed information boards with recommendations on wearing a mask, maintaining social distance, and following hand hygiene. Disinfectants are used at the entrance door to check the temperature of those who apply to the center. Initially, patients' temperatures are checked at the Admissions Department. If the patient has a high fever, a COVID-19 test is recommended. Admitted patients are referred directly to the X-ray room for examination. Due to the safety of patients receiving inpatient treatment in connection with the pandemic, according to the rules of a special quarantine regime, meetings with relatives of patients are prohibited. All rooms and corridors are cleaned regularly with a disinfectant solution.

The center always holds meetings with educational institutions and awareness-raising seminars. How did you continue this activity during the pandemic?

In order to raise awareness, pandemic-related events in educational institutions have been temporarily postponed. Only regularly in penitentiaries, in front of military school graduates, young officers and soldiers, in the media, "Let's say NO to drugs!" Awareness-raising questions and answers, discussions and debates on drug addiction are conducted online.

What are the most common cases in the appeals to the center?

Based on recent appeals, we can say that the number of cases of co-administration of two or more synthetic, semi-synthetic and natural drugs has increased. Concomitant use of synthetic psychoactive substance "methamphetamine" and opiates from the group of psychostimulants causes acute disorders of the nervous system of users. In such cases, in addition to narcologists, there is a serious need for psychotherapists and neurologists.

How many people are registered at the center and is there an increase or decrease compared to last year?

At present, the number of drug users registered at the Center is 33,788. 618 of them are women, 9 are 15-17 years old, 12-369 are 18-34 years old. Last year, this number was 32921. However, it would be wrong to consider this increase as an increase in the number of drug users in the country. I think this is a change in the number of appeals to the Narcology Center. In other words, we see this as an increase in confidence in the treatment carried out at the center.
